Fishing’s
End
Longliner
Alec Connah
Ten thousand tinsel teeth flash nylon smiles
Girdling the globe—cat’s cradle o’ rats tales
Teasing the terminal—festooned and falling foul
Draw swordfish, turn turtle, and set sales
Wanderers drown in dollars—
Protein pirouettes, a dance in the depths
Soldered forms and ladles in waiting
Net profit, titanic, myopic
Sounding out shadows—winching on sushi
Hawser cocoons the procession
Spools out, schools out—ad nauseam
Hunters hung caught—steal the show
Another doomed queue rounds the
block
Tearing a yawn from their silence
Rictus embellished, the pressure sensitive
Bequeath to us once more their void.
