Stories Submission Guidelines |
||||||||||
— All work and correspondence should be submitted electronically to seastories@blueocean.org. — Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. — We try to acknowledge receipt of submissions within a month, so contact us if you haven’t heard anything from us by then (but don’t re-send your submission unless we ask you to do so). - We make an initial review of current submissions every three months, but it may take us up to six months to make a final decision on your work; we thank you for your patience. — Simultaneous submissions are fine, as long as you notify us immediately if work you have sent to Sea Stories is accepted elsewhere. — We welcome previously published submissions, provided that you are the copyright holder (see Terms of Use below). — Submissions are considered by multiple editors with various tastes, all looking for quality work. We are eclectic and proud of the content and variety of each issue we publish. — When we do not accept your submission(s), please know that we have considered your work with care. Perhaps this particular work just wasn’t right for us. We encourage you to do some more market research, revise, do some new work, and move on. Don’t let it get you down. — Because this is a non-profit venture, no fees will be paid for the use of any work. Literary Submissions — Your writing should be accessible, non-technical, and hospitable, with an emphasis on exploring the meanings of the sea from your own perspective or experience. We do not publish fiction or political or philosophical polemics. Scientific, historical, literary-critical, or other scholarly writing is of interest only if it highlights your own experience and perspective on the issues discussed. — You may submit up to 6 poems, totaling no more than 10 pages, and/or 2 prose works, with a maximum of 2000 words per essay. Only one set of submissions per season, please. — Please send all submissions in a single Word document attached to your e-mail cover message. Do not embed your submissions in the text of your e-mail. Include in the document your name, address, telephone number, and email address, as well as a brief bio (maximum 100 words). Guidelines for Photography and Art Submissions — Sea Stories seeks high-quality photographs and digital images of sea-related art for each issue. — Please limit your art and/or photography submissions to no more than 10 per season. — Please send each image in a separate file in .jpg or .bmp format, with cover e-mail. Do not embed your submissions in a Word document or e-mail text. Include in your e-mail cover letter your name, address, telephone number, and email address, as well as a brief bio (maximum 100 words). Terms of Use — Creators retain all copyright to their work. — By submitting a work to the Sea Stories Project, you are representing that you are the copyright holder and are giving us permission to publish it in the Sea Stories journal if we so choose, without additional notification on our part (though we will strive to provide such notification when possible). — Submissions accepted to Sea Stories may be lightly edited or cropped at our discretion, again with no notification required. In cases where more substantial editing is required, we’ll contact you about it. — Please credit Sea Stories with first publication if you re-publish your work in another book, anthology, or Web site. — While our intention is to archive published work indefinitely, accepted submissions may be removed from the Sea Stories archive at any time by our choice or upon author’s written request. — Whether or not it is accepted for the Sea Stories journal, submissions may be considered for inclusion in later Sea Story Project ventures such as books, local readings, or radio; we will contact you regarding any such future use of your work. |
