Giving Life a Meaning to Sing:
More Poems by Young People of Seychelles

Deep in the Blue Ocean
Ramy Ernesta, 18, National Institute of Education

There are wonders the eyes cannot see
More precious than any treasure
They live free in harmony

Down in the deep blue ocean
They are the heart of every source
Of life and untold legends and mysteries

Down in the deep blue ocean
Where our friends the dolphins
Display an orchestra of acrobats and a chain of rhythmic melodies
Giving a festival of colors
And life a meaning to sing

Down in the deep blue ocean
A majestic parade is taking place
Full of pride and honor, our friends the whales
Silently swim through crystal clear shady blue
Surely very beautiful
Strong but fair
Truly masters of the ocean

Deep in the blue ocean
A lesson can be learned and taught:
They are mirrors of our past
And source of our future.

Another World
Velma Cafrine, 15, Praslin Secondary School

Dive into this world of luxury,
Find yourself surrounded by the endless brine.
Engulfed by so much grace,
And such a prismatic view
On which god must have spent more time.

Holding heaps of riches,
Riches formerly unknown to the world.
In it, much important resources,
Including the billions of fishes
Which gracefully swim our warm waters.

A world of pure beauty,
Yet becoming more exploited—
Once man discovered its riches,
Gave out its secrets,
Not knowing its dangers.

Fishes with the best source of protein,
Abused by man’s greed.
Caught unnecessarily in nets
And thrown away to die,
Just because they’re small and useless.

Lost minds endangering other lives,
Ignoring simple facts:
The benefit of our country,
And the tourists as a wherewithal.
But most of all,
For the new generation.

Peaceful seas of Seychelles,
The pearl of our nation.
A source of economy.
But essentially,
A real treasure
To be treasured!

Dolphins and Whales: Creatures of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Sarah Maurer, 18, Seychelles Polytechnic

Far away on the edge of the world or right under our feet
In the wake of dawn or in the shadows of dust
They will forever be a part of the ocean, a part of our lives

Mythical creatures of yesterday
Kings and queens of the abyss
Sweet and gentle children of the sea

Gliding and surfing on the waves
Dancing with grace and pride on the crystal clear ocean
Graceful ballet display of these gentle giants
Playful gymnastics among the waves

Creatures beyond our knowledge
Intelligence beyond our expectations
More courageous than the greatest warrior

Loving and caring, protectors of their own
Dolphins and whales are the image of love and peace
Protectors and saviors of the above world
Ambassadors of the waters, keepers of the depth

Destined to be wild and free
Now prisoners of men
Promised happiness and peace
But hunted and murdered for sport

Dolphins and whales are masters of the oceans
The protectors of the weak and fragile
They are the guardians of the seas
They are the kings and queens of the water world
They are our forever friends.

Peaceful Creatures

Thyra Faure, 16, Anse Royale Secondary School

The water running deep and blue
Crystal clear and full of marvels
Little fishes, big fishes
Seaweeds, corals, jelly fish
All live in harmony.

Further away but not too far
In a harmonious habitat
Live our friends the dolphins and whales
Laughing and playing like children
Amongst themselves
Nothing is amiss.

But then,
Suddenly the peacefulness of the oceans
Is shattered by the roaring sound of engines
The laughter of children
The chatter of adults
Fills the air
Unable to restrain their curiosity
Little heads peek up from the sea
Seeing no danger on the horizon
They suddenly emerge from their safekeeping.

“Look children” cries a mother
“Where, where” call the children
“There, near the boats”
“Yes, we can see them
Aren’t they beautiful?”

Cameras click,
the sound of footsteps
echo on the decks
As everyone rushes
To see our marvelous friends
The dolphins and the whales.

Ocean Survivals
Alvin Mondon, 11, Mont Fleuri Primary School

In this vast area of water,
Every little thing matters.
Different species of different colors
Have survived throughout the years.

Let them be free,
Do not exploit what we see.
Our turtles that visit our beaches,
Give them the chance to increase their species.

Foreign fishing boats in our waters,
Net-taking whatever the sea offers.
Abide to your rules and regulations,
Do not destroy our ocean’s population.

Enjoy the beauty of our corals
That are formed after so many years.
Leave them in their natural state,
Don’t disfigure this habitat just for our sake.

What’s in our sea is so fragile and indispensable,
A false step, and we’ll all be responsible.
This is part of our life and culture
Let’s cherish what is given to us by nature.

My pleading call
Kalsey Belle, 12, Independent School

Below the waves,
Away from the sun rays,
In the majestic blue sea,
No-one pays attention to me.
I silently roam
Beneath the ocean’s foam,
Living my life
With no reason to be killed by a knife,
For I am peaceful
Not wishing to be spiteful.

Here I am quite safe
Among those of my race.
Thanks to my shell,
Which was given by a decent spell.
It is very helpful,
Saves me when I am not careful.
But this is very rare
Man always give me a sudden scare.
But that is not all,
Please hear my pleading call!

Up, up, up above
Where there are doves,
Live the mankind
Who love to dine
On our meat
As it is such a nice treat.
They being so powerful,
It can be dreadful
Listening to the stories
Of us few who have horrific memories,
Those who have been
Near the boat and seen
Some of our friends
As they reached their life’s end.

Our pleas are often unheard,
Even by the affectionate birds.
Because we are mute
Others assume we have nothing to contribute.
We cannot talk—
But take this as no shock,
We have much to say.
Maybe one day we’ll find another way.
We will bring this message,
Despite the darkest passage.

We are under a dangerous threat
And I regret
How I spoke so dearly of you humans
Who are taking away our very existence.
So please take this word of advice
Instead of cooking us with spice:
Spare me!
The silent one.
Spare my friends!
Before too much damage is done!

Under the Sea
Jean-Marc Athanase, 13, Praslin Secondary School

Under the sea
Life is so peaceful.
It is beautiful to see,
Part of nature so restful.

Life is paradise
With harmony that cannot be bought with a price.
Sea creatures swim in fear
For poachers are always so near.

Soon nets will come down
And spears will be thrown.
None will be spared
Even if they are all scared.

Fishermen think of their money,
Housewives their curry.
They do not even care,
If they are destroying marine life
To the point of extinction.

Others are fishing for fun
As a hunter does with his gun.
All their actions are merciless,
Leading our nation into a mess.

If only people could see
That they must protect the sea.
The sea would be a better friend,
Providing man with his daily meal
Now and forever still.

The Ocean
Imaan Ja’far, 12, International School

Deep down beneath this amazing ocean
Where daylight can hardly penetrate
There live millions of creatures
Different sizes, species and colors

Deep down beneath this vast ocean
Where survival is the rule of the game
There is the space to live,
Swim, feed and breed

Deep down beneath this great pool of water
Where changes takes place constantly
Thousands become immigrants
Every second and minute of a day

Let us preserve our ocean
Keep it free from pollution
So that millions can live in it and from it

Let us keep it as a source of life
A heritage to the generations to come.
